Frequently
Asked Questions
Q:
Are these forms limited
to brides only, or can grooms also use them?
A: If the groom’s new name is indicated
on the marriage certificate, he will be able to use these forms.
Q:
Do I need to go through the name-changing process
if I am hyphenating my last name with my husband’s?
A: Yes. A hyphenated last name is treated like
a brand-new last name.
Q:
Can I start the name-changing process before my
wedding?
A: You can fill out the forms in advance, but
you will need a certified copy of a marriage certificate that
states your new name in order to complete the name-changing
process. We also advise that you wait until after returning
from your honeymoon to send out these forms, to avoid having
discrepancies between your official documents. You may travel
with a passport and plane ticket that bears your maiden name.
Q:
Can I complete the name-changing process entirely
through the mail?
A: Almost all agencies allow you to change
your name through the mail. An exception is the Department of
Motor Vehicles, which requires you to show up in person. Also,
if you live in certain areas of the United States, you may be
required to change your name with the Social Security Administration
in person.
Q:
Does it cost money to change my name?
A: Most agencies and organizations will do
it for free, but some do charge a fee. You will also need to
obtain a certified copy of your marriage certificate, which
costs a nominal fee.
Q:
How many certified copies of my marriage certificate
will I need?
A: One will suffice, as agencies that require
it will return it to you. However, if you’d rather not
wait for one agency to return your certified copy before sending
it out to another, you should purchase more than one copy.
Q:
What record should I change first?
A: We recommend that you start with your Social
Security card.
Q:
If I start the name-changing process, do I have
to complete and mail out all the forms at the same time?
A: You can go through the process at your own
pace. But remember that the sooner you get it all done, the
less confusion there will be down the road.
Q:
Can I use these forms to change my name in a non-marriage
situation?
What about after a divorce?
A: These forms are meant for recently married
people, but you may also use them to change your name after
a divorce if your new name is stated on your divorce decree.
They do not apply to other name-change situations.
Q:
If I order a name-change kit from you, will you
fill out the forms and mail them out for me?
A: No. That service only provides you with
print-outs of the forms found through the links on this site.
The forms will be blank, and you will be responsible for filling
them out and mailing them yourself. The point of using the service
(which costs $15) is to avoid having to download and print out
all the forms yourself (which is free).
